The start of a new decade means new technologies. Some will make our already-convenient lives even more convenient. All will allow us access to even more information, services, and goods. So, let’s take a look at the top technology trends we can expect to see in 2020.

5G

It’s always about speed. Cell phone data networks are always expanding and getting faster. A few years ago, LTE became the faster 4G. Now, 5G is a new, fast thing. Searches, streaming movies, and videos will fly when the network is completed. The hype and roll out have already begun, but it will take time for the full value to be evident.

Increased connection speeds also mean more smart machines in our lives. What’s next?

Self-Driving Cars

Self-driving cars might have seemed like sci-fi movie stuff in the past, but they’re already a reality. Both Google and Tesla already have tests on the street and product plans. Expect to see Tesla’s first self-driving car at the end of the year. Google recently transported 6,200 people with autonomous taxis in a month. And we’ve had our first traffic fatality, which means the age of the autonomous car is officially here. Then there are the automated trucks (with test drivers) by Amazon that are delivering packages for Prime members.

AI-as-a-Service

Right now, AI programs require programming experience and know-how. Even with open-source software, the average Joe Schmoe wouldn’t be able to fiddle with things like TensorFlow without first learning Python. However, with more, easy-to-use AI programs, more people and companies will jump onboard the machine learning bandwagon.

Precision Medicine

Machine learning technology has far-reaching uses and consequences, including medicine. Telehealth companies are already on the rise and precise, personalized medicine isn’t too far behind. Researchers are training computers to read MRI’s and give a diagnosis. Some claim they are more accurate than expert doctors. The idea is that we’ll eventually train machines to accurately predict health problems and create treatment plans that are tailored to a specific person.

Computer Vision

Facial recognition technology has been used by law enforcement and security systems for years, the difference now is that it’s flowing down to the rest of us. In 2019, Face ID on iPhones became so widespread that it seems almost second nature for our devices to scan our faces before unlocking. More to come.

Electronic Sensors

Researchers are creating electronic tongues and noses to test water samples and “sniff out” air quality. Unlike sensors in the past that can only recognize one molecule, new electronic sensors use a mix of machine learning and biotechnology tools to identify mixtures. These sensors are so sensitive that they’re able to differentiate between fresh milk, sour milk, and all the stages in between.
